Descriptif du poste

BatvoiceAI is looking for a Senior Technical Product Owner to participate in the product’s design as a hands-on Shaper. The product up to now has been entirely client-driven, at the whims of each clients’ idiosyncrasies. The result, while useful, lack cohesion and integration, sometimes failing to address the core needs underlying user requests, which tend to be technically problematic while being a suboptimal solution. As such, we’re looking for someone that will interact with clients, rethink the user journey, simplify the experience by integrating key parts of the product, bringing cohesion to it, while having the technical chops to know what their pitches will entail ahead of time, being able to help technical staff understand what’s actually being solved, judging the various implementation tradeoffs.

You will collaborate with:

  • The Application team: you will be defining projects that they will work on. Depending on availability, we expect you to be able to pitch in as well, potentially even leading one every once in a while.

  • The Customer team: you’ll be talking to the clients, and so will they! While their goal is to make the client happy and solve their perceived problems, your goal will be to identify their underlying struggles and bring long-term solutions that will apply to everyone.

  • The Betting Table: Your primary output is going to be ShapeUp pitches. Since projects are not kept around from one cycle to the next, you will need to continually re-evaluate what’s passed and what hasn’t, refine what you’ve got, and prioritize the many things you’ll want to do. The betting table is where we decide what goes and what doesn’t, so you’ll interact with them at the very least every cycle.

Put differently, this job is made for you if you love to dig deep into the details of what problems are actually present and how they can be solved in a generic way. If you love not just designing a solution that exists in a void, but also understanding how it might be built - the only recipe for something that isn’t just good, but is truly excellent.

The Challenge

Currently, the product’s components are all very custom, built incrementally. A client asked for something, it got made. What’s worse, customers often don’t think their requests through, so while implementing their requests is good for short-term sales, in the long term it doesn’t solve their actual problems optimally.

As such, we’re looking for someone with a holistic view, to rethink the user journey, analyzing their underlying difficulties and needs, determining ways to resolve them that will be more cohesive, integrating key parts together. The goal is for the product to eventually provide for a simpler experience, that may have less functionality at large, but still serves all of the actual fundamental needs the users have.

The Environment

  • We are a fully remote company, though we do make physical offices available if you prefer those. Regardless of this, you must have the right to work in France, and to live in Europe or North Africa.

  • We do not measure seniority by years of experience, but in terms of results and ability, leading to rapid advancement opportunities.

  • We offer comprehensive healthcare coverage through Alan for you and your family (50% participation).

  • From their second year onward, team members who demonstrate strong commitment and motivation may be granted stock options, reflecting their contribution to BatvoiceAI’s long-term success and journey.

Profil recherché

Research has shown that having strict quantitative requirements discourage applicants that would have otherwise performed well at the position from applying. As such, instead of experience, we define skills you should have. Since this position is a combination of business and technical needs, don’t feel like you need to fit everything mentioned. Take the entries as indicative, and be open to talk about what you have, and what you lack.

That said, combined with our general definition for Senior, as well as our company Values, we encourage you to apply if you believe you are a good fit for our needs, provided you can justify it in some way. We document how we make hiring decisions in our public Interview Process document, which should similarly give you an idea as to whether you are likely to be selected, noting that the process will be similar but not exactly the same as for a pure engineering position.

  • UX (User Experience): Our solution needs to focus on how it works more than on how it looks. You should be aware of usability metrics, but most importantly have a mind for making things work usefully.

  • Software Development: We don’t expect you to be a developer necessarily, but you should be ready and able to participate in building anything you propose.

  • Performance: Relatedly, you need to have a mind for performance (and thus the knowledge of how your proposals might be implemented). A solution that is slow introduces friction, and a solution full of friction is not useful. The biggest contributor to performance degradation is the feature itself (e.g. inference is always slower than well-optimized FTS), and the second is the implementation (e.g. using a suboptimal data structure): you should be able to contribute to both of these parts.

  • Curiosity: To understand what people’s actual needs are and to figure out what the actual best solution is, you need to be curious. Not merely willing to but liking to dig deep and gain a complete understanding. We see ourselves as problem solvers, so it’ll also help you to write your pitches to be able to speak the same language.

  • Teamwork: You need to be able to recognize when you’re lacking knowledge, and not be afraid to ask, to avoid proposing something wrong. Being a team player also means your pitches are more likely to get buy-in from the team!

  • Human Languages: Internally, we communicate in English, but you’ll also be talking to our clients, which mostly speak French, so you need to be able to speak both of these. Knowing more is cool too though, our CEO Max speaks 8 languages (ask him about it sometime).

Déroulement des entretiens

The entire recruitment process (including the steps we take internally) is documented in our Public Handbook. This position is a mix of business and technical, so the basis for the process is similar to our engineering recruits. The short version looks like this:

  1. Your CV and Cover Letter are reviewed by Engineers. This will take 1-2 business days at most.

  2. Bidirectional technical interview. If you’re selected for this step, you will be contacted to schedule this. It can happen as early as the day you’re selected, or within the next couple of days. This will be less tech-focused than the dedicated engineer one, but you will still have a practical component to it before moving on to more business-oriented matters.

  3. HR interview and Culture Fit with Maxime, our CEO. This step depends on his availability, but should not take more than a couple of days to organize.

  4. You get an offer! It’s up to you to accept it or not. If you accept it, you’ll come meet some of the team (we are fully remote) in Paris, at which time we’ll also sign the final documents.

We expect to finish the selection process by the end of January, at least for the first batch of candidates. Also note that while the start date is marked as February 23rd, if you’re a good fit, we’re willing to wait longer for you (early march).
