Context
Organs on Chip, or micro physiological systems (MPS), have the potentiality to increase the speed of discovery of new treatments and replace animal models. At Cherry we developed a new device, CubiX, that has the power of controlling the physical parameters of the cellular environment. Given the novelty of this approach, we want to fully characterize this system and, if needed, look for new approaches allowing better biological models and multiparametric control (dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, shear stress) that will increase the potentiality of the CubiX platform.
Mission
In our research facilities (physics/engineering and biological laboratories), you will learn how to build complex and advanced organs-on-chip devices, characterize these systems and contribute to the advancement of the field. In particular you will be aiding us on the characterization of our novel MPS systems and will participate in the finding of new microfluidic, physics and engineering solutions for current challenges.
Your main tasks during the internship:
● Perform and help in the characterization of current CubiX platforms in terms of dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature and shear stress provision to the biological models.
● Develop and refine new multiparameter control hardware and protocols based on the capabilities of the CubiX platform.
● Build and modify our current MPS platforms to achieve suitability for ambitious research projects.
● Communicate results by reports and oral presentations to your supervisors and to the company.
● Participate to the regular R&D meetings.
Main skills expected to be acquired at the end of the Cherry experience:
● Develop of a good theoretical and practical knowledge about the multidisciplinary, complexity and challenges associated with building and validating new advanced MPS.
● Understand the main rationale behind the needed control on different physical parameters in MPS models to maximize the positive and repeatable outcome of biological experiences.
● Learn how to build MPS systems, trouble-shoot them and understand associated protocols needs.
● Understand the importance of usability and system design for user and market (generally linked to biology, biotech and pharma) acceptance of MPS.
● Last year of Biomedical engineering/Master 2 degree
● Previous experience(s) in chemical or biology laboratory will be highly appreciated
● English fluent speaker and good writing skills mandatory
● Curious, prone to lateral thinking and problem-solver
● Rigorous with an analytic and critical mind
● Perseverant and flexible
● Attracted by the challenging and dynamic environment of a start-up
