Job description

Hi, we’re Back Market.

We’re here to help make tech reliable, affordable, and better than new. We're a global marketplace for refurbished devices, helping lower our collective environmental impact by providing trustworthy, affordable tech with 92% less carbon emissions than new.

Yep, you read that right. Turns out refurbished tech is way better for the planet than new. In fact, With every device purchased on Back Market, our positive impact on the planet grows. From our Customer Care representatives to our software engineer, every individual at Back Market cuts the planet — and consumers — a break. Our mission is simple: to do more with what we already have.

Are you ready to join us?

About the team

The AI for Care (AI4C) squad's mission is to automate and augment customer care at scale, turning complex support interactions into fast, satisfying resolutions, powered by large language models and modern AI architectures.

One of Back Market's newest squads, formed in early 2026, sitting at the intersection of software engineering and applied AI. As a Software Engineer, you will work closely with the other AI-focused teams at Back Market, a growing community to brainstorm with, learn from, and push the field forward together.

What you will do in this role

We're looking for a software engineer with a genuine interest in AI, someone comfortable working across the stack and motivated to take on new challenges as the team grows.

Our ideal candidate is someone who learns fast, writes clean code, and takes ownership of what they ship. This is an associate profile, so you should have a year or two of experience, counting software engineering and AI internships. Your engineering background should give you solid fundamentals in mathematics and machine learning. Statistics, probability, and optimisation are things you've actually studied and understood, not just heard of.

Day-to-day, you'll contribute to features that reach real customers: automated customer issue resolution, troubleshooting AI agents, answer suggestions for human agents — end-to-end, from design to LLM integration to production.

English must be a no-brainer as you will join an international team dispatched in different locations around the world (US/FR/ES/JP).

Main technical challenges

Back Market's customer care handles millions of interactions across markets and languages. The challenge for the AI4C squad is to make AI a reliable, production-grade layer on top of that, not just demos and prototypes.

The AI4C squad sits at the crossroads of backend engineering and applied AI, and that means you'll touch a variety of interesting problems. Building the services, MCPs and APIs that power AI features in production, designing the tooling that gives LLMs reliable access to internal systems, making sure it all holds up at scale.

On top of that, LLM-powered systems come with their own class of engineering problems: evaluation, observability, prompt reliability. The field moves fast, and knowing what's worth adopting is part of the job.

As an AI Associate Software Engineer

  • Experiments with new AI tools, models and patterns, and brings what's worth keeping back to the team.

  • Contributes to building and evaluating LLM-powered features that reach real customers.

  • Builds and maintains the backend services and tooling that power AI features in production (APIs, connectors, integrations, think MCP servers and the like).

  • Takes real ownership of tasks, wherever they sit in the stack, design, code, or production.

  • Writes clean, consistent, and well-organised code with guidance from senior engineers.

  • Actively participates in code reviews and technical discussions within the squad.
