Descriptif du poste

We’re opening a new chapter in European journalism. Be a part of it.

About us

Contexte is an independent media outlet: employee-owned with a subscription-only model. Our mission is to provide policy professionals with the information they need to make decisions. Contexte establishes a new standard of quality information by delivering and curating the most factualin-depth policy news and analysis.

We are looking for two Monitoring Journalists to scan for morning breaking news relevant to our English-language verticals who could start between December and January.

At Contexte, we:

  • Offer expertise to help our readers navigate complex environments.

  • Provide deep, nuanced and verified analysis to get as close as possible to the facts.

  • Maintain independence from external influences through economic and editorial autonomy.

The company has grown rapidly since its launch in 2013. Today, we are a team of 110, including 35 journalists in Paris and 21 in Brussels.

Our political news is delivered every morning to the inbox of 14,000 subscribers working in NGOs, private companies, public administrations, consultancies and law firms.

We cover policies spanning energytransportagri-foodenvironmenthealth, tech and media. We also lift the hood on how governments exercise political power and how lobbyists develop their influence. Our products are designed to provide timely, actionable information, so professionals can stay ahead of developments and make informed decisions for their organisations.

Our existing cross-cutting French-language politics vertical, “Pouvoirs”, has covered the ground, from leaks of the Letta report, to analysis of the European Commission’s hyperpresident and cross cutting issues like the EU’s budget and simplification drive.

An English-language vertical on energy policy - launched in May 2025 - was the first of our ambitious new line of products focused on EU policy. Now we’re pursuing our expansion in Brussels with a second EU vertical, Politics in the coming months.

The two Monitoring Journalists will scan for any breaking news relevant to our two English-language verticals: Politics and Energy. You will be working in tandem with the morning proofreaders/copyeditors and will be an integral part of the editorial team. You will be part of our European newsroom.

The role requires excellent news judgement, fast and concise writing, and ability to work morning shifts (6-8am CET) and every other Sunday, for an average of about 6 hours per week. The contract would start in December or January.

What you will do:

  • Scan the headlines and official sources to pick out relevant and interesting news/developments published overnight or in the early hours of the morning that would serve our readers;

  • Write news briefs to be added to our EU briefings in English, ready to be sent out that morning;

  • Help proofreaders answer questions they may have about texts produced by journalists before sending the briefing at 8 a.m.

Profil recherché

This is for you if:

  • You are interested in and knowledgeable about EU politics and policies.

  • You are a journalist with at least 5 years experience looking to supplement your schedule as a freelance or part-time journalist.

  • You have native-level English skills and have experience with Anglo-style journalism; A knowledge of French (or other languages) can prove helpful, but writing will be only in English.

  • You have excellent news judgement and are able to zoom in on the most important developments relevant to our readers.

  • You are extremely thorough; you can write quickly, concisely and accurately.

  • You are very well organised, you can work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines; you can juggle several topics during your shift.

  • You like to work early in the morning, or you are on the other side of the world and 6 a.m. here (CET) is the middle of the day for you.

Déroulement des entretiens

  • 1st step: a test to measure your news judgement, time management and writing skills.

  • 2nd step: a call with our Recruitment officer.

  • 3rd step: Interview — discussion with the Managing Editor, the Editor-in-Chief (Brussels) and one of our Monitoring Journalists for the French editions.
