Trainline is in a period of rapid scale with the People Team central to supporting the company’s ambition and growth plans.  

We are looking for an experienced International Payroll Manager to oversee Payroll at The Trainline and work with our 3rd party Payroll provider.

Reporting into our Head of People Operations & Systems, you’ll work on all things Payroll with responsibility for supporting employees across the business and ensuring a compliant and accurate payroll across each of our markets. You’ll provide high quality support in relation to payroll processes and projects and quickly become an integral part of the team and wider business. 

You will be responsible for the management of our out-sourced payroll, including: 

  • Overseeing the administration and processing of the monthly payroll, ensuring it is accurate and on time. 
  • Completion of Payroll reconciliations & sign-off. 
  • Ensuring compliance in accordance with local regulations & audit controls & procedures. 
  • Managing the relationship with our external payroll vendor, ensuring satisfactory service and a stable payroll. 
  • Partner with Finance team of relevant payroll processes. 
  • Partner with the Finance and Internal Audit teams on all audit requirements. 
  • Liaising with Tax authorities to ensure any submissions and payments are accurate. 
  • Driving regular process and quality audits to ensure payroll and data quality. 
  • Providing Trainliners with accurate and consistent support with regards to Payroll practices and processes.  
  • Focusing on transforming, building and maintaining effective Payroll processes and policies with a tech first mentality and in compliance with local legislation. 

Based on the sensitive nature of the role, it’s important that you bring the appropriate degree of discretion and empathy in the way you operate. To this end, you’ll be responsible for identifying escalation points and making sure that any issues are managed appropriately and are dealt with efficiently. Furthermore, being heavily involved in all our Payroll processes means that you’ll be ideally placed to contribute towards the development of new solutions that further enhance the quality, competence and effectiveness of our current offering. 


Preferred experience

We’re looking for a team player with a ‘roll your sleeves up’ attitude. A self-starter with a helpful, people-orientated demeanour and a high degree of integrity and confidentiality.  Super-strong organisation and interpersonal skills are essential, and you’ll also bring the ability to work at pace and with agility.  

Some with strong experience in Payroll management is crucial. We are looking for someone to own the relationship with our new out-sourced payroll provider in the UK who can bring in best practice processes and ensure a stable monthly payroll.

This is a role based in the UK but as we also support offices in France, Spain and Italy so experience of working with employees in these countries would be helpful but not essential. 

Required Skills: 

  • Proven Payroll experience with a knowledge of payroll regulations, standards, tax legislation and compliance requirements in the UK and Europe. 
  • Preferably CIPP certified but not essential. 
  • Excellent judgment and problem-solving skills with a pragmatic approach to providing solutions. 
  • Experience leading Payroll projects and initiatives 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Excellent attention to detail and data literacy. 
  • Strong organisational and time management skills. 
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite; specifically excel.
