Job description

Back Market is the world’s leading refurbished electronics marketplace with a team of 700 people, powering operations in 17 countries (and counting!).

Named one of the World's Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company in 2019 and again in 2021, our mission is simple: empowering people to consume tech sustainably by offering folks a high quality, accessible, and more eco-friendly alternative to buying new electronics. Why? Refurbished tech helps lower our collective environmental impact. We have indeed contributed to avoid the production of 963,226 tons of CO2e worldwide since our launch in 2014.

Be part of an exciting and growing international adventure that will change the way the world consumes tech.

Our engineering department, the Bureau of Technology

Representing a third of our overall team, the Bureau of Technology is structured around concepts introduced by the foundational “Spotify model”: Squads, Tribes, and Chapters.

Spread across 5 tribes, the ~20 Product squads are the cross-functional, autonomous teams building and operating services to deliver value to customers and suppliers. They are grouped into tribes addressing a common theme. These Product squads are supported by the ~10 Platform squads, which address the cross-cutting challenges, as well as the CyberSecurity team.

The Frontend Chapter team and focus :

The Frontend Engineer Chapter is composed of 32 passionate frontends and its mission is to scale & elevate Back Market web application(s) for our customers, merchant & staff.

We aim to empower users to find the right products & services on Back Market. This means helping our customers to discover, understand, trust & love Back Market, encouraging them to explore our catalog through seamless browsing flows, and promoting tailored content. The Frontend Chapter is therefore very customer-facing and driven by the user experience.

As a Staff Engineer, you will have a key transversal and very impactful role across all the chapter's teams. You will help all the front-end engineers to accomplish their best work and bring beautifully crafted experiences to our customers.

Your expertise is deep and broad. You are able to navigate between hands-on and hands-off work, producing both high-quality code and architectural designs. You strive for simplicity and understand the cost of building and maintaining software.

Our technical environment:

Our platform is based on Nuxt/Vue.js and our own Design System (e.g.: design tokens + Tailwind). We love TypeScript and actively adopt it everywhere. We do our best to be accessible to anyone (e.g.: audits, trainings).

We have several web applications, all Server Side Rendered, and served through Node.js, Cloudflare CDN and Cloudflare Workers. We’re anticipating a move to the Edge.

Our GitHub contributions go through CircleCI, to be fully tested (e.g.: ESLint, weight control, Jest, Testing Library, Playwright). We release and deploy in production multiple times a day (e.g.: ArgoCD, Kubernetes, AWS & GCP), and are actively moving to a continuous deployment.

We are looking for a Frontend Staff Engineer to :

  • Drive the code quality up by facilitating the sharing of good practices inside the chapter and different tribes, reviewing code, helping with design, mentoring engineers, making sure that chapter projects get done
  • Help the delivery of the roadmap by providing in-depth support to squads during especially hard projects or complicated situations.
  • Contribute to the codebase by overseeing major technical evolutions or adding new capabilities to the codebase that will speed up other engineers.
  • Facilitate communication between the various engineering leadership groups by being involved in transversal conversations and bringing the tribe’s point of view to the table
  • Providing subject matter expertise in the development of long-term plans involving strategic development for the chapter
  • Establishing and promoting frontend design guidelines, best practices, and standards
  • What you will bring to the team :

  • 7+ years of relevant and broad engineering experienceExperience successfully operating in a service-oriented architecture
  • Experience mentoring and developing engineers
  • Experience addressing web performance topics (SEO, SSR, Analytics )
