We are a fast-growing start-up (set to double in size within a year), and therefore have, by nature, new opportunities that are constantly being created. Our culture of initiative and autonomy is part of being a very horizontal company. There are currently 17 of us, and there are is only one level of management. We have a structure where each employee has a lot of freedom and little managerial control to encourage initiative.
Beyond the structure, we try to do our best to keep our talent. For example, our first-ever employee follows an adjusted schedule because she is also a professional volleyball player, and two of our other employees have started working part-time to accommodate their studies.
I started working at Zeffy in June 2020 as a content intern. By September 2020, I had become the first employee in customer success. Initially, the role was dedicated to support, but as the company scaled, I was trusted to create and automate our processes. During that time, I added a customer success and account management aspect to the role while working closely with the product team. As of June 2022, I am now a full time product manager which is my second promotion in two years. At Zeffy, we trust each other a lot, which allow each individual to own multiple initiatives and provide the maximum impact.
Our culture of freedom and feedback, as well as an opportunistic attitude towards training, is the basis for the development of skills. At Zeffy, giving feedback is central. Every employee is constantly encouraged to give honest and constructive feedback to others (regardless of hierarchy). In addition to feedback, we offer a lot of freedom so that employees have time to learn and find the information. That said, we have few formal training programs, although we do encourage or sometimes fund training as needed. This has been the case for a Product Management program, for instance.
number of business days per year dedicated to volunteering
Each year, the entire team meets for a two-week summit (in 2021 in Montreal, in 2022 in Champagne, and 2023 in America). While the main objective of this summit is for teams to meet and better understand the roles of their colleagues across the Atlantic, it is also about collectively reflecting on our challenges, our vision, and our values. More frequently, our weekly All Hands meeting aims to be the forum for transparent information sharing. Transparency is of the utmost importance to us, and that’s why all of Zeffy's figures are known by all employees across all teams. Finally, our commitment is not just on the online side of things. Every other month, we volunteer as a team for a local organization. And of course, happy hour is not out of the question after the work gets done!
