The position

Job description

To provide engineering & design solutions from work winning concept phase to practical completion of projects with the common goal to win projects and to increase site net margin.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Deliver competitive designs (wholistic rather than simply pile element).
  • Ensure design efficiency and buildability. Take full accountability for creating designs that are not only efficient but also practical and buildable, with input from collaboration with the operational teams.
  • Provide technical and design support to all BSL departments and be fully integrated to the estimating teams and operational teams to aid their performance.
  • Responsible for cage standardisation with the approval of the PM (cost).
  • Provide controlled pile schedules tailored to site.
  • Responsible for the production of fabrication drawings including temporary works/ lifting points in the cages.
  • Leading, checking, and approving fabrication drawings from cage suppliers.
  • Responsible for the production of the method drawings (cage installation, central bar installation, etc...).
  • Ensuring method drawings are understood by key people onsite (work manager pm supervisor).
  • Responsible for the production of the PTP and WTP drawings.
  • Analyse the project input in order to interrogate it, reach an agreement and integrated in a design solution.
  • Design on performance-based approach, observational approach rather than compliance approach.
  • Contribute to deliver technical handover to operational teams. Define pre-agreed mitigations (anticipation vs reaction).
  • Attend external meetings with Clients.
  • Manage internal and external clients’ expectations.
  • Embrace, promote positively and meet KPI set out by the Engineering Manager.
  • Contribute to the continued improvement of the Engineering process within the department.
  • Share ideas with Design and Engineering colleagues and to a certain extent broader organisation members.
  • Conduct benchmarking studies to determine best practices/designs and future trends.
  • Engage and receive feedback from estimating teams and operational teams for the purpose of continuous improvement.

Physical Working Environment:
Regular trip between sites, main offices and plant yard will be required to fulfil the role.


Preferred experience

Knowledge, Experience and Qualifications Required:

  • Masters level qualification in Civil Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards chartered status is preferred.
  • Ability to design piles and embedded retraining walls is required.
  • Ability to design micropiles, minipiles, ground anchors, soil nailing, soil mixing and jet grouting would be advantageous.
  • Ability to design pile cap, capping beam and slab would be advantageous.
  • Geological knowledge of ground conditions in North of UK.
  • Appreciation of ground condition risks (mining / sink holes / scour features).
  • Basic CAD skills to produce simple method related drawings / cross sections with geology.
  • Knowledge of construction processes, methods and site practices.
  • Familiarity with software packages such as WALLAP would be advantageous.
  • Ability to identify, assess and highlight technical and commercial risks.
  • Agility and ability to work at speed on multiple workstreams concurrently and work under pressure.
  • Willingness to attend the office and work as part of fast paced teams.
  • Ability to independently recognise their knowledge and skill limitations and the limitations of those they will be working with.
  • Resilient, assertive, humble, optimistic and open to change.
  • Confident manner, good presentation skills to Client, Consultant, Site teams, Supply Chain and internal departments.
  • Determination – not easily discouraged or put off, embrace personal challenge.
