Job description

About us

We are champions of rail, inspired to build a greener, more sustainable future of travel. Trainline enables millions of travellers to find and book the best value tickets across carriers, fares, and journey options through our highly rated mobile app, website, and B2B partner channels.

Great journeys start with Trainline 🚄

Now Europe’s number 1 downloaded rail app, with over 125 million monthly visits and £5.9 billion in annual ticket sales, we collaborate with 270+ rail and coach companies in over 40 countries. We want to create a world where travel is as simple, seamless, eco-friendly and affordable as it should be.

Today, we're a FTSE 250 company driven by our incredible team of over 1,000 Trainliners from 50+ nationalities, based across London, Paris, Barcelona, Milan, Edinburgh and Madrid. With our focus on growth in the UK and Europe, now is the perfect time to join us on this high-speed journey.

Purpose of the Role

We’re looking for a Group Tax Manager to join our Finance team and report directly to the Group Head of Tax. This is an exciting time to join Trainline as we continue to develop our in-house tax capability, evolving from a fully outsourced model into a dynamic internal advisory and compliance function.

Working closely with our enthusiastic Senior Tax Analyst, you’ll play a key role in shaping the future of the tax function – helping to deliver our roadmap and driving process improvements across the business.

No two days are the same at Trainline. In this role, you’ll:

  • Gain exposure across the business, working with teams company-wide to raise the visibility and profile of the tax department.

  • Own and manage a wide range of taxes including Corporation Tax, VAT, Employment Taxes and Transfer Pricing.

  • Bring new ideas and insights to improve and automate processes in our fast-paced environment.

  • Stay on top of evolving tax legislation to ensure Trainline remains compliant and future-ready.

And lots, lots more…

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage all compliance tax matters for the Group across the UK, France, Italy, Spain, and Belgium – working with external advisors to ensure timely reporting.

  • Lead on Corporation Tax and VAT compliance, as well as supporting HR Operations on employment tax queries.

  • Oversee budgeting and forecasting for Corporation Taxes, automating processes where possible using Pigment.

  • Identify and drive tax process improvements and training across the business.

  • Support and mentor the Senior Tax Analyst in their professional development.

  • Partner with the Head of Tax and wider teams on ad-hoc research, VAT and transfer pricing projects, and new product launches.

  • Manage relationships with external auditors and advisors.

  • Prepare tax disclosures for statutory accounts, and act as the bridge between the tax and finance functions.

  • Oversee the completion and submission of VAT returns in the UK and EU.

  • Manage Quarterly Instalment Payments, group cash taxes, and intercompany transfer pricing with Finance and Treasury.

  • Lead on tax governance, including maintenance of the CCO risk register and SAO annual process.

  • Manage R&D tax relief claims across jurisdictions.

  • Track budgets for external advisors and monitor legislative changes impacting the Group.

About You

We’re looking for someone who is confident, collaborative, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. You’ll combine strong technical knowledge with the ability to “tell the story” behind the numbers.

You’ll also bring:

  • ACA, CTA, ACCA (or equivalent) qualification

  • Strong experience preparing UK corporation tax returns and group-level audit provisioning.

  • Excellent understanding of tax accounting and compliance processes.

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, vlookup, sumifs, etc.).

  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

  • A proactive, hands-on approach and a “can-do” attitude.

  • High attention to detail and excellent organisation skills.

  • A collaborative mindset – a big thinker with a small ego.

This role will suit someone making their first move from practice, or a tax professional already in-house and looking for a new challenge in a global tech environment.
