The position

Job description

The Sustainability Officer is responsible for implementing and monitoring sustainability programs within the company’s supply chain in alignment with Touton’s sustainability strategy and sustainability standards such as RFA, Organic, and Touton’s own PACT standard. This role ensures that all sustainability interventions, certifications, and traceability systems are effectively executed and reported, while building strong relationships with field teams, stakeholders, and local partners. The officer plays a critical role in aligning field operations with global sustainability goals and regulatory requirements such as EUDR.

Key Responsibilities

1. Commercial / Sourcing

· Supervise the farmer registration process to establish and maintain a robust farmer identification system.

· Oversee farm mapping in compliance with EUDR (EU Deforestation Regulation), Touton’s PACT Standard, and RFA (Rainforest Alliance) requirements.

· Supervise traceability and certification processes for all targeted crops within the project region.

· Collaborate with the Trade team to build and maintain a reliable traceability system.

2. Operations Management

· Manage and supervise a team of agronomists to ensure the company’s sustainability targets are met.

· Develop work plans and budgets aligned with the company’s sustainability strategy.

· Design and implement efficient systems, procedures, and tools for activity execution and team performance tracking.

· Consolidate and supervise reporting of sustainability activities and operations, ensuring timely execution within approved work plans and budgets.

· Lead recruitment, training, and supervision of branch-level staff in collaboration with HR.

· Monitor and evaluate staff activities and performance.

· Oversee sustainability budget execution and report monthly financials to relevant managers.

· Ensure that all expenses are aligned with approved budgets, supported by a calendar of activities, and comply with Touton’s internal procedures and local regulatory guidelines.

· Coordinate recruitment, enrolment, and training of Lead Farmers and Producer Organizations, including partnership management with external stakeholders.

· Collaborate closely with Touton Uganda Management on operational planning and execution.

3. Sustainability Implementation

· Ensure timely, cost-effective implementation of sustainability interventions in line with company and certification standards (e.g., RFA, PACT).

· Maintain all required certifications within the operational supply chain.

· Coordinate submission of financial and activity reports for internal and donor/client use.

· Ensure all financial reporting and expenditures related to sustainability activities are fully justified, documented, and aligned with company policies, donor requirements, and applicable Ugandan regulations.

· Supervise data collection efforts, offering technical support to field staff as needed.

· Liaise with the global IT and M&E teams (in Bordeaux) to align data standards and support digital tool development.

· Engage with external stakeholders—donors, clients, certification bodies, and partners—to represent the company’s sustainability interests.

· Collaborate with Touton’s Sustainability team on project development, execution, and strategic reporting.

· Manage relationships and report on partnerships with local service providers and stakeholders.

· Prepare and submit donor-specific reports, acting as a key point of contact for related matters.

· Contribute to the development of new sustainability projects, innovations, and expansion efforts.

· Represent Touton positively in the field to suppliers, partners, and stakeholders.

4. Reporting Responsibilities

· Sustainability Officers based in Kyotera is required to prepare and submit quarterly financial and calendar-based activity reports.

· These reports must be submitted to the Country Sustainability Manager and copied to the Kampala team for quarterly reviews.

· In the absence of the Country Sustainability Manager, these reports must still be prepared and submitted as scheduled to ensure alignment with company planning and external reporting timelines.


Preferred experience

Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, Agronomy, Environmental Sciences, Sustainable Development, or related field.

· At least 3–5 years of relevant experience in sustainability, agricultural development, certification schemes, or supply chain management.

· Strong knowledge of sustainability standards such as Rainforest Alliance (RFA), and EUDR requirements.

· Proven experience in managing field teams, planning operations, and monitoring performance.

· Experience in stakeholder engagement, particularly with donors, clients, and certification bodies.

· Proficiency in data collection and reporting tools; familiarity with digital traceability systems is an advantage.

· Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.

· Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

· Fluent in English; knowledge of local languages is an asset.

· Willingness to travel frequently to field locations across the region.
