Job description

We’re opening a new chapter in European journalism. Be a part of it.

About us

Contexte is an independent media outlet: employee-owned with a subscription-only model. Our mission is to provide policy professionals with the information they need to make decisions. Contexte establishes a new standard of quality information by delivering and curating the most factualin-depth policy news and analysis.

This is why we:

  • Offer expertise to help our readers navigate complex environments.

  • Provide deep, nuanced and verified analysis to get as close as possible to the facts.

  • Maintain independence from external influences through economic and editorial autonomy.

The company has grown rapidly since its launch in 2013. Today, we are a team of 123, including 42 journalists in Paris and 22 in Brussels.

Our political news is delivered every morning to the inbox of 14,000 subscribers working in NGOs, private companies, public administrations, consultancies and law firms.

We cover policies spanning energytransportagrifoodenvironmenthealthtech and media. We also lift the hood on how governments exercise political power and how lobbyists develop their influence. Our products are designed to provide timely, actionable information, so professionals can stay ahead of developments and make informed decisions for their organisations.

Our existing cross-cutting French-language politics vertical, “Pouvoirs”, has covered the ground, from leaks of the Letta report, to analysis of the European Commission’s hyperpresident and cross cutting issues like the EU’s budget and simplification drive.

An English-language vertical on energy policy was the first of our ambitious new line of products focused on EU policy. Now we’re pursuing our expansion in Brussels with a second EU vertical, Politics, expected by the end of 2025.

Join a collaborative European newsroom

As part of our pioneering English-language team, you’ll join a truly European newsroom designed for collaboration. The English-speaking team, writing for a purely European audience focused on EU policies (two journalists), will work closely with our French-speaking team writing for the France edition (also two journalists) to cover EU Politics. For your colleagues, you’ll collect information and share insights, sources, and ideas to ensure comprehensive, high-quality coverage tailored to your respective audiences.

Your team will also include an adaptation editor to adapt content across languages and a dedicated manager to provide guidance and support. Beyond your immediate colleagues, you’ll be part of a larger team, joining our established 22-person Brussels newsroom, where you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with reporters

What you will do

Our mission is to understand the technical and structural factors influencing political decisions, and to reveal how power is wielded and public policies developed within the European Union.

In this role, you’ll play a key part in uncovering and delivering the critical insights our readers rely on:

  • Break news, secure scoops, and analyse leaks: You’ll develop trusted sources across various levels of power—from official corridors to less visible networks—to gather exclusive information, leaked documents, and untold stories.

  • Deliver valuable insights: Keep readers informed with timely updates and in-depth analyses that cut through the noise, combining speed with substance.

  • Contribute to our daily newsletter : Provide concise and accurate on-the-ground reporting and track key developments in EU energy policy.

  • Create impactful content: Write compelling articles and collaborate with our team to design striking infographics that convey complex topics clearly and effectively.

  • Engage in live discussions: Participate in Contexte Live sessions, our 45-minute video debriefs where you’ll discuss major issues alongside fellow journalists and expert guest speakers.

The position is based in Brussels, where you’ll report to the Managing editor overseeing EU Politics news coverage.

What you will join

  • A collaborative, mission-driven newsroom in Brussels, launching its first international products and embracing diverse cultures.

  • The opportunity to play a foundational role in building a European newsroom focused on shared expertise, cross-language collaboration and top-notch journalistic standards.

  • A commitment to work-life balance and team support.

Preferred experience

  • Scoop-hunters driven to uncover exclusives and gather information you won’t find anywhere else.

  • Passionate storytellers with a sharp eye for looking behind the scenes: at how institutions really work, and how power is really exercised.

  • Experts in navigating the “Brussels bubble,” with a deep understanding of EU institutions and policymaking.

  • Writers who can deliver sharp, insightful analyses tailored for EU professionals, offering them a better understanding of EU institutions

  • Attention to detail, able to follow, root around in and write about technical subjects

  • Team players excited to help establish a new product in a competitive media landscape.

  • Fluency in English, with impeccable written skills (native/C2 level or equivalent).

  • French is a plus, as the broader team is largely French-speaking. That said, French is not a requirement—your ability to thrive in an international, collaborative environment is what really matters.

Recruitment process

  • Interview with our HR Officer

  • Interview with our Managing Editor and Brussels Editor-in-Chief

  • Interview with our journalists in Brussels

  • Interview with our CEO and our Editorial Director
