Paris | Internship | Starting September 2025

Team: Public Sector Consulting – AXA Climate

Who are we?

Within AXA Climate, the Public Sector Consulting team supports developing countries in enhancing their resilience to climate risks. We work primarily with development banks, humanitarian actors, and international institutions — especially across Africa and South America. Our work focuses on modeling current and future climate hazards, designing adaptation strategies, and developing innovative risk financing tools.

What will you do?

We’re looking for an Intern to support our technical activities. This role is ideal for someone passionate about data, climate risk, and public good.

You will contribute to:

  • Modeling climate hazards over multiple geographies

  • Designing parametric insurance solutions for weather-related events (e.g. droughts, floods, wildfires)

  • Conducting economic analyses of climate risk financing tools

  • Supporting technical delivery for key public sector clients (e.g. the World Bank, regional development banks, international institutions, NGOs, and governments)

Your responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Senior Technical Underwriter, you will:

Scientific & Technical Development

  • Develop statistical models for risk and vulnerability assessments

  • Explore and test new meteorological and vulnerability data sources (e.g. radar, satellite, alternative providers)

  • Identify key issues related to high-frequency climate events and propose innovative solutions

  • Share your modeling approaches and explain technical concepts to the team

Risk modelling

  • Collect and analyze data from public sources and partners

  • Build risk models tailored to specific hazards and target populations

  • Prepare technical documentation and presentations for clients and stakeholders

  • Support the development of new tools to communicate our risk modeling insights

  • Compare and assess different risk transfer mechanisms beyond insurance

Preferred experience

Education

  • Enrolled in an engineering school (Grande École) and/or MSc in a relevant field

Background

  • Studies in Data Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or Quantitative Economics

  • Knowledge of meteorology, atmospheric science, or weather analysis is a plus

  • Understanding of economics and/or prior experience in risk modeling is an advantage

  • Experience working with geospatial datasets (e.g. shapefiles, rasters), using QGIS, and Python libraries such as geopandas and rasterio is a plus

Language

  • Fluent in either English or French, with at least conversational ability in the other

Key skills

  • Strong quantitative background (statistics, probability)

  • Proficiency in Python

  • Sensitivity to the societal impacts of climate change

  • Autonomy and strong organizational skills

  • Integrity and collaborative mindset
