Job description

We seek a highly skilled and experienced Principal Engineer to lead the design, development, and implementation of an AWS-based data platform, enabling data-driven decision-making at scale. Reporting to the Head of Engineering, Data Operations, your role is key in defining how different departments across AVIV access and process data, helping drive their data maturity and enabling them to use data to create value.

You will play a crucial role in helping to shape the organisation's data strategy, ensuring scalability, reliability, and efficiency in managing and processing data. Ideally, you have a deep understanding of AWS services and data architecture best practices and a proven track record of guiding and mentoring engineering teams in delivering complex technical solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, design, and guide implementation of the AWS-based data platform, aligning architectural decisions with business goals and strategic priorities.

  • Spearhead the adoption and implementation of decentralised data ownership principles, focusing on delivering value through a proper set of tools and technologies.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to determine business needs and drive the evolution of federated data products with a keen eye on product outcomes.

  • Continuously evaluate and integrate new AWS features and services to enhance the platform's capabilities and meet evolving needs.

  • Collaborate with infosec, legal and enterprise architecture teams to define and enforce data architecture standards, guidelines, and best practices.

  • Communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, highlighting the impact on business outcomes and the protection of sensitive data.

  • Mentor and guide engineering teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and unwavering commitment.

Preferred experience

  • Proven track record building data platforms and products in AWS environments.

  • Strong business acumen and product-oriented mindset.

  • Strong leadership and collaboration skills with the ability to work across teams and departments.

  • Strong experience with data engineering tools and technologies, such as Kafka, Hadoop, and Spark.

  • Experience with data modelling, federation, and governance. This includes but is not limited to establishing data contracts, introducing quality checks, handling PII data, and complying with GDPR.

  • Experience in and strong attitude towards working in platform engineering teams.

  • Ability to work in an agile environment, ensuring efficient collaboration and continuous delivery.
