Job description

Alice & Bob is developing the first universal, fault-tolerant quantum computer to solve the world’s hardest problems.

The quantum computer we envision building is based on a new kind of superconducting qubit: the Schrödinger cat qubit. In comparison to other superconducting platforms, cat qubits have the astonishing ability to implement quantum error correction autonomously!

We are at the forefront of the quantum race, competing with tech giants such as Google or IBM, and we are growing fast after securing  €100 million of funding in 2025 to develop our unique technology.

About the role:

The Performance Optimization team is at the heart of our mission: using Machine Learning to dramatically improve the quality, speed, and reliability of the quantum chip lifecycle—from design and simulation to calibration and error correction.

As a Junior Machine Learning Engineer, you will serve as the vital bridge between exploratory research and production-grade deployment. You will not just build models; you will own the journey from a bottleneck in production to a novel, solved implementation. Working directly with ML scientists and quantum physicists, you will translate complex mathematical concepts into robust software solutions.

Beyond the code, you will play a key role in maturing our engineering culture by consolidating the software engineering stack within the optimization team and advising the Platform teams on tooling development.

Responsibilities

  • End-to-End ML Deployment: Design, implement, and deploy machine learning and optimization algorithms. You will take ownership from the initial proof-of-concept phase to full production integration. 
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with physicists and ML researchers to interpret experimental data and translate physical requirements into algorithmic solutions. 
  • Production Excellence: Deliver algorithms within a cross-functional environment. You are responsible for the timeliness, robustness, and compatibility of your code with our existing machine interfaces and numerical simulation stacks. 
  • ML Infrastructure: Manage large-scale model training on our GPU cluster, including job scheduling, resource management, and performance monitoring. 
  • Engineering Standards: Elevate the code quality of the optimization team. Define software standards and collaborate with Platform teams to enhance the internal developer experience.
  • Requirements

  • Educational Background: Master's degree in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Applied mathematics or related field.
  • Technical Proficiency: Solid expertise in Python programming and numerical modelling. Familiarity with modern tensor libraries (specifically PyTorch or JAX). 
  • Mathematical Fluency: A solid mathematical foundation (linear algebra, probability, optimization) enabling you to communicate effectively with physicists and researchers.
  • Nice to Have

  • Production Experience: Industry experience launching ML applications in user-facing products or critical production pipelines.
  • Research Impact: One or more publications in machine learning conferences as a lead author.
  • Interdisciplinary Work: Experience working on multi-disciplinary projects, particularly those involving physics, hardware, or scientific computing.
