Job description

Agence France-Presse, one of the world’s leading news agencies, is seeking a dynamic, self-starting, Japanese and English-speaking video journalist for its Tokyo Bureau.

You will be working in a fast-paced environment alongside text and photo colleagues, as well as the bureau chief and the news-Editor in AFP’s Tokyo bureau to help produce compelling, varied and accurate coverage to tell the story of Japan to a global audience.

You are expected to be capable of pitching, planning, and organizing video coverage, especially in breaking news situations, consulting as needed with editors in Tokyo and Hong Kong.

You will frequently shoot events live and deliver fast edits from the field, especially in case of breaking news, which will require you to be very responsive. You will also have to provide stockshots on places and topics of note in order to keep our image database up to date.

You may also be called upon to cover events outside of Japan if the news requires, mainly in Asia-Pacific but potentially outside of the region as well.

You will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy of your reporting and respect for the AFP’s editorial policies.  You will bring a multimedia approach to the job and coordinate closely with text reporters and photographers.

As well as excellent shooting and editing skills, you should have a solid understanding of social networks for information gathering purposes. You must be able to source and handle user generated content during breaking news situations, including ensuring proper authorizations/transfer of copyright are obtained before using videos from third parties.

You will contribute to the fight against misinformation by helping factcheckers in the AFP network and ensure you’re trained in the various methods of online verification, now indispensable for all journalism. Online training is available here.

The role may require long workdays and unsociable hours, dictated by the news agenda, and will include working some weekends and public holidays.

You will also help reinforcing our network of freelancers and third-party providers in the country.

In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.
