Job description

AFP is seeking a dynamic, self-starting Korean speaking video journalist for its Seoul Bureau.  This exciting post involves shooting and editing hard news and features, and reinforcing the video network in the wider region when necessary.

Working alongside colleagues from text, photo, and digital verification in the Seoul bureau, you will help to produce compelling, varied, and accurate coverage. You will frequently shoot events live, deliver fast edits from the field, and nurture and reinforce our network of freelancers and third-party providers in the country.

The job involves a mix of reporting and editing both news and feature videos. You will help to plan and run the agency’s video coverage throughout the country. You will also be expected to fully contribute to the planning and administrative side of the job.

The video journalist is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of his/her reporting and respect for the agency’s editorial policies. Candidates will bring a multimedia approach to the job and coordinate closely with text reporters, factcheckers and photographers.

Candidates should have a solid understanding of social networks for information gathering purposes.

They must be able to source and handle user generated content during breaking news situations, including ensuring proper authorisations/transfer of copyright are obtained before using videos from third parties.

Successful candidate will contribute to the fight against misinformation by helping factcheckers in the network and ensure he/she is trained in the various methods of online verification, now indispensable for all journalism. Online training is available here.

The role may require long workdays and unsociable hours, dictated by the news agenda, and will include working some weekends and public holidays.

In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.

  • Brimming with visual story ideas which would appeal to a wide range of viewers both online and on TV

  • Solid knowledge of social media and a strong interest in stories that will engage a young audience

  • A keen eye for the multimedia aspect of coverage, as you will work closely with the text, photo, factcheck and graphics department
