Our impact

The protection of the environment is the foundation of our company, a prerequisite. For our founders, breeding insects was a sustainable alternative to traditional proteins. For example, we use 98% less land and 40% less resources to produce one kilo of insects than a traditional farm.

Ÿnsect is part of the circular economy: we do not produce waste. We recycle insect frass to create a fertilizer that can be used in organic farming, which has been shown to produce results on growth and health than chemical fertilizers.

Nevertheless, all human activity has an effect on our environment. At Ÿnsect, we are aware of this and consider that it is our responsibility to implement actions to limit and reduce our impact as much as possible. That' s why in 2019 we created a cross-functional department called 'Impact'. The aim of this department is to qualify, measure and calculate the consequences of our activities on the world around us, and to encourage our teams to always do better. It is this famous "more with less" that pushes us to improve on a daily basis.

It is within this framework that we carry out life cycle analyses (LCA), the most advanced tool in terms of global and multi-criteria assessment of environmental impacts. This study allows us to say today that our activity is carbon negative: we avoid and sequester more CO2 than we emit.

Rewilding the world

Based on preliminary results, we launched our "rewilding the world" program in 2019, in partnership with associations and citizen initiatives. The program aims to protect biodiversity and wildlife areas in the most effective, collaborative, and legally-binding way possible. Our commitment is to return at least as much land to wildlife as is saved by Ynsect's vertical farms, as soon as the areas are freed up.

Our objective is to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2050 in order to reach the IPCC's 2° objectives concentrating on two key areas:

1) The construction of our vertical farms, 2) Our consumption of energy and food for our insects.

Beyond climate, we are also working to assess our impact on biodiversity, human health, resources, and water. To this end, our Impact Director, Jean Gabriel Levon, has set up carbon accounting alongside our traditional accounting methods.
