Job description

Join our team as a Phage Production Technician responsible for executing bacteriophage production processes under GMP-like conditions. You will perform phage propagation using shake flasks and benchtop bioreactors (up to 10L scale), followed by downstream purification steps including centrifugation and filtration. This role requires meticulous adherence to SOPs and aseptic techniques within a BSL-2 laboratory environment, working autonomously as part of a small, dedicated team (2-3 people).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Upstream Processing:

    • Culture host bacteria strains using aseptic techniques.

    • Execute phage propagation protocols according to established SOPs, utilizing both shake flasks and benchtop bioreactors (working volumes typically 1L - 10L).

  • Downstream Processing:

    • Perform initial phage purification steps, including centrifugation and various types of filtration (e.g., depth filtration, sterile filtration, potentially Tangential Flow Filtration - TFF).
  • Stock Management:

    • Prepare, manage, and maintain bacterial host strains and bacteriophage stocks according to defined procedures (cell banking).
  • Equipment & Environment:

    • Operate, monitor, and perform routine checks on laboratory equipment including incubators, centrifuges, biological safety cabinets (flow cabinets), and bioreactors.

    • Work consistently under strict aseptic conditions within a BSL-2 laboratory environment to ensure process integrity and prevent contamination.

  • Documentation & Compliance:

    • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all performed activities in batch records, equipment logbooks, and inventory systems, complying with GMP-like documentation practices.
  • Teamwork & Lab Support:

    • Collaborate effectively within the small bioprocessing team.

    • Contribute to general laboratory organization, maintenance, and management of consumables inventory.

Preferred experience

  • Education: Minimum “Bac+3” (e.g., Licence Professionnelle, Bachelor’s degree) in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biology, Bioprocessing, or a closely related scientific field.

  • Experience: 2-3 years of relevant hands-on laboratory experience, ideally in a biotechnology, pharmaceutical production (including GMP), or applied microbiology setting.

Essential Skills & Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in core microbiology techniques, particularly strict aseptic technique and bacterial culturing (experience with flask cultures is essential).

  • Practical experience with basic downstream processing techniques such as centrifugation and filtration.

  • Proven ability to follow complex protocols (SOPs) precisely and consistently.

  • Strong attention to detail and meticulous record-keeping/documentation skills (experience with GMP-like documentation is a plus).

  • Experience working safely within a controlled laboratory environment (BSL-2 experience is highly desirable).

  • Ability to work autonomously and manage tasks effectively.

  • Familiarity with operating standard laboratory equipment (incubators, centrifuges, biological safety cabinets). Experience with benchtop bioreactors is a significant advantage.
