We are seeking a talented and motivated Research Scientist (Bioinformatics) to join our dynamic team. You will be a key expert in the cutting-edge fields of phage genomics and comparative biology. Your mission will be to design, build, and deploy novel computational tools and pipelines to investigate bacterial-phage interactions.
Main Responsibilities
Build, test, and maintain inhouse genomic and sequence analysis software to address research challenges (prophage detection, functional annotation, mutation visualization/recombination detection) up-to-date on the most cutting edge tools and technologies
Conduct large-scale comparative genomic analyses to understand phage diversity, evolution, host range, and phage-host relationships.
Support LabOps, R&D, and Data/AI teams by identifying bioinformatic challenges and solutions
Support best practices for code documentation, results organization, and data management using version control for full reproducibility
Technical Skills
Proficiency in applying computational analysis to phage and microbiology (Required)
Building, deploying, and managing complex bioinformatics pipelines using Nextflow (Required)
Strong proficiency in homegrown bioinformatic tools and software scripting using Python and/or R (Required)
Maintains an up-to-date understanding of current literature and tools, effectively incorporating the latest developments into operational pipelines and analyses (required)
Deep understanding of NGS analysis (Highly Desired)
Familiarity with machine learning principles and their application in bioinformatics (PyTorch/TensorFlow) (Highly Desired)
Proficiency with cloud environments (AWS Batch or AWSHealthomics), version control (Git) and containerization (Docker, Singularity) (Highly Desired)
Soft Skills
Excellent analytical and problem solving abilities
Proactive and collaborative communicator, able to work independently
Strong motivation and flexibility to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment
Fluent in English (written and spoken)
Experience and Education
PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field with 1+ year of professional bioinformatic experience.
Alternatively, a Masters degree in a related field with 4+ years of equivalent professional bioinformatics experience.
2+ years of experience in developing, deploying, and maintaining complex bioinformatics pipelines.
2+ years of experience developing custom bioinformatics tools/software ( in Python/R) for genomic analysis, demonstrated by publications or software packages.
