What’s the job? About the role We are looking for an experienced Engineering Squad Lead to join the Colleague Commerce team. This team builds tools used by store colleagues to handle customer orders, queries and in‑store online ordering. You will lead a squad delivering a major rewrite of the DotCom Plus platform (currently ATG‑based): a greenfield rebuild that will selectively reuse existing components, with an initial rollout for B&Q and multi‑brand deployment planned from early 2027. The role combines people management, hands‑on system design and technical leadership across frontend and service interactions, with a strong focus on reliability, automation and fast delivery cycles.
Responsibilities - Line‑manage and coach squad members, supporting career development, performance reviews and goal setting
- Plan and deliver team commitments, orchestrating execution to meet customer and engineering outcomes
- Drive continuous improvement in team performance, processes and engineering practices
- Provide technical leadership in system design, architecture and microservices interactions; review designs and set standards
- Collaborate cross‑functionally with Product Owners, Chapter Leaders, backend engineers and designers to align priorities and roadmaps
- Ensure quality and reliability by promoting automation, testability, observability and robust CI/CD practices
- Report on progress and risks to stakeholders and help remove blockers that impede delivery
What you’ll bring Skills and Experience - Proven people management experience with a track record of coaching, mentoring and setting objectives
- Extensive software development background, preferably web development with backend experience
- Strong frontend understanding - able to discuss UI/UX trade‑offs and influence frontend architecture
- Hands‑on system design skills and solid knowledge of microservices principles, REST APIs and data flows
- Practical AWS experience and familiarity with cloud‑native patterns
- Experience with automation testing and maintaining test suites for scalable applications
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication and problem‑solving skills
- Fluent English (written and spoken)
Tech stack
- Primary: JavaScript, React, Node.js
- Testing & automation: Playwright or Cypress; automation‑first mindset
- Infrastructure & CI/CD: AWS, Git, GitLab CI/CD / Jenkins
- Data & messaging: SQL for validation; Kafka is a plus
Nice to have - Experience with retail/e‑commerce platforms (ATG ecosystems)
- Background in observability, performance testing and reliability engineering
- Familiarity with GraphQL and server‑side rendering frameworks
