What’s the job? About the role As an Engineering Squad Lead, you will be responsible for supporting and developing team members while ensuring the consistent and effective delivery of team outcomes. Working in close partnership with Product Owners, you will strengthen collaboration within the team, ensure alignment with wider business objectives, and contribute to ongoing improvements in ways of working.
You will actively mentor and support engineers through regular feedback and coaching, using your technical expertise and leadership skills to maximise the team’s effectiveness.
Responsibilities - Act as a line manager for team members, supporting their professional development, career progression, and overall wellbeing through regular feedback, coaching, and performance conversations.
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee the delivery of team commitments, ensuring alignment with agreed customer, product, and engineering outcomes.
- Take ownership of driving continuous improvement in team performance, effectiveness, and operational efficiency by refining ways of working and delivery practices.
- Provide ongoing coaching, guidance, and constructive feedback to help team members develop their technical and professional capabilities.
- Collaborate closely with Chapter Leaders to share updates on delivery progress, support capability building, and enable both individual and team-wide development.
- Leverage strong software engineering expertise alongside effective leadership skills to shape the team’s impact and maintain high engineering standards.
- Establish clear goals and ensure alignment with wider organisational objectives, monitoring progress and addressing risks to support continuous delivery and improvement.
What you’ll bring - Extensive experience in software development, with a background in web technologies (backend or frontend) and/or quality engineering.
- Strong understanding of the IT industry, including emerging technologies, trends, and their relevance to retail or similar sectors.
- Proven experience leading and motivating teams in large, complex, and fast-paced matrix environments.
- Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills, with the ability to build relationships across the organisation.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
- Ability to solve complex problems, work effectively in ambiguous situations, and deliver practical solutions.
- Passion for people leadership, including coaching, mentoring, and talent development.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and high-performing team culture.
- Understanding of modern QA methodologies.
- Solid understanding of infrastructure concepts and experience working with automation and test frameworks.
- Excellent command of English (written and spoken)
