As an Engineering Director, you are the leader, overseeing the delivery, performance, and people management for the Matching and Sourcing squads, composed of 8-10 product engineers  This is a direct leadership role, not a manager-of-managers position, where you will maintain a strategic and product mindset while keeping a love for the software craft. You are in charge of the growth and development of how clients and freelancers connect on Malt. Today, they do so via the AI search (our main staffing flow) and the ATS (enabling independent selection and evaluation of freelancers); tomorrow, why not a full AI experience? You play a crucial role in defining and implementing our technical strategy, driving project timelines, and fostering a high-performing and collaborative engineering environment. This is a hands-on leadership role in which you're shaping the product experience that hundreds of thousands freelancers rely on.

Key responsibilities ✨

  • Architect the future of AI-native sourcing: You’ll be building Europe’s premier AI-native staffing experience. You aren't just maintaining a search bar; you are redefining how clients find talent, ensuring that the journey from "need" to "hire" is seamless, intelligent, and human-centric.

  • Lead Product Delivery: Your role is to translate ambitious business goals into a concrete technical roadmap. You are the guardian of the balance between velocity and debt: you'll navigate the trade-offs between shipping high-impact AI features today and maintaining the long-term reliability and "craft" of the system.

  • Optimize Team Performance: You’ll drive excellence through architectural guidance, active participation in code reviews, and a commitment to the software craft. You don't just manage workflows; you raise the technical ceiling of your squads.

  • Develop and Grow Talent: You are the primary gardener of your team’s environment. You’ll provide the mentorship, coaching, and feedback necessary to ensure your squads always operate with a product engineering mindset. You foster an atmosphere of extreme ownership, where engineers are unblocked, focused, and empowered to solve problems independently

  • Drive Operational Excellence: You’ll set the tempo for delivery. By mastering agile methodologies and refining team rituals, you ensure the squads move fast without breaking things. You’ll champion a culture of "getting things done," maintaining high velocity even when navigating complex constraints or evolving priorities.

  •

    About you 🧑‍🚀

    • A significant experience as a hands-on Manager: You still love the craft and stay close to your team's challenges through code reviews, architectural discussions, and technical quality.

    • AI‑Driven Innovator: You don’t just follow AI trends; you experiment with them. You’ve ideally worked with AI agents or LLM integrations and are eager to translate that tech into a world-class user experience

    • Strategic Decision-Maker: You are comfortable at the intersection of tech and business. You know how to navigate complex trade-offs, balancing the need for rapid feature delivery with long-term system health. .

    • Technical Mentor: You don't just manage tasks; you build environments. You excel at coaching engineers (ML engineer or Software engineer) to take extreme ownership and move from "feature builders" mindset to "problem solvers".

    • Product Mindset: You come from a product-company background and understand that code is a means to an end. You define your vision as “product engineering". You are more driven by the “why” than the “how”.

    • Resourceful: You are a natural "owner" who finds a way to get things done. Whether facing staffing constraints or shifting priorities, you identify the path forward and rally the team to take it

    • Impactful Communicator: Fluent in English (French is a bonus), you can distill complex technical or AI concepts into clear, actionable insights for stakeholders at any level.

    • First call with Alex, our Talent Acquisition Business Partner, to better understand your background, aspirations and answer any questions you may have. (45 minutes)

    • Interview with your future manager, Jean (VP engineering), to delve into your experience and the specifics of the role. (60 minutes)

    • Product case and debrief with PM, Design & EM to explore how you collaborate with stakeholders, manage conflicts, delivery and innovation

    • Technical case and debrief with staff engineers to validate your mastery of technical and architectural subjects

    • Final interview with Claire (CTO) to discuss Malt’s long-term vision (interview at the Paris office)
