Job description

AFP is looking for a video journalist to be part of a dynamic team in Beijing which handles China and Mongolia video production (“The Region”).
This exciting post involves shooting and editing hard news and features in the Region.

The video journalist is core to our coverage. The role is extremely varied, including breaking news and feature pieces.

The Video journalist films and edits compelling, varied and accurate coverage from across the Region and will shoot numerous events Live.

The video journalist is also expected to generate original, imaginative and lively feature and focus stories. Sourcing and verifying UGC content is also part of the role.


Preferred experience

The ideal candidate will be a seasoned video journalist with excellent camera skills and a proven ability to work fast and in a team.

He/she will have substantial experience in China and will have a wide range of sources and contacts. The candidate must have demonstrable experience and excellence in shooting live video of high-level political and diplomatic events, as well as engaging and compelling TV news and feature stories.

We are looking for someone brimming with visual story ideas which would appeal to a wide range of viewers both online and on TV, he/she must have a keen eye for the multimedia aspect of coverage and will work closely with the text, photo, and graphics departments.

The role may require long work days and unsociable hours, dictated by the news agenda, and will include working some weekends and public holidays. The news flow can be very heavy at times, and the successful candidate must be able to work under pressure.

In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base. The successful candidate must ensure the reliability of our news coverage and respect for the agency’s editorial policy.

Use of social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) and networking apps is essential, in accordance with the guidelines for using social networks as an AFP journalist. You will contribute to the fight against misinformation by helping factcheckers in the network and ensure you are trained in the various methods of online verification, now indispensable for all journalism. Fluent or native-level English is essential and excellent Mandarin is essential. Knowledge of Chinese affairs is expected. This is a full-time job open to candidates who are eligible to work in China.
