Job description

What is the role?

Data and software solutions in the energy-and-climate-space are growing at an incredible rate. Blunomy is growing the team to support the energy industry through its digitisation, decentralisation, and decarbonisation transition – and to enable better operability and planning in Australia and around the world.

We are looking for an experienced and passionate Data Engineering Manager to lead, mentor, and empower a high-performing team of software and platform engineers. We are a team of full stack Python and GCP developers. We find the best solution for the job that is good enough for many jobs. We are early adopters where it simplifies what we are doing.

You will be instrumental in fostering a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement, directly contributing to the delivery of robust, scalable software and platform solutions that drive our impact in the climate-tech space. Reporting directly to the CTO, you will translate strategic technical vision into actionable plans, ensuring your team is equipped to tackle complex challenges and deliver innovative solutions.

Your Impact Areas:

As a Data Engineering Manager, you will lead your team to deliver solutions that directly impact our mission and contribute to cutting-edge projects. Your leadership will enable our engineers to build and maintain the core systems that drive value, including:

Vision Planner: model and predict the evolution of the load on the electrical network. Use ma-chine learning, data analytics and a fair amount of software development to forecast long-term energy consumption, daily energy profiles and Distributed Energy Resources (Electric Vehicles, Battery, Solar PV).

Vision Connect: dynamically model the energy network bringing together power flow modelling and machine learning to determine the DER hosting capacity of the local area. Used in production to approve hundreds of DER connection requests a day.

Bushfire risk modelling: model and compute the network related bushfire risk based on fault ignition likelihood. Calculate the consequences of bushfires such as property damage or agricul-tural loss.

Your Tasks:

As a Data Engineering Manager, your primary focus will be on leading and enabling your team to achieve its full potential. Your responsibilities will include:

·         Lead, mentor, and manage a team of very smart software and platform engineers, fostering a high-performance and collaborative environment.

·         Be responsible for team performance, productivity, and professional development, ensuring en-gineers have clear goals and growth paths, and facilitating regular performance reviews.

·         Collaborate closely with Product Management on planning, execution, and delivery timelines for new features and platform enhancements, ensuring alignment and clear communication.

·         Facilitate team processes, identify and remove technical and process blockers to ensure smooth project delivery and maintain team velocity.

·         Drive the adoption of best practices in software development, coding standards, code reviews, testing, and documentation to ensure code quality, maintainability, and security.

·         Champion developer experience and efficiency, working with platform engineers to improve CI/CD pipelines, automation, and internal tooling. · Contribute to technical strategy and architectural discussions, ensuring solutions are scalable, reliable, secure, and align with the overall technology vision set by the CTO with the prospect to step up and take more ownership of the strategy.

·         Ensure effective communication within the team and with external stakeholders, providing clear updates on project status, challenges, and opportunities.

·         Be actively involved in recruiting, interviewing, and retaining top engineering talent, contributing to the growth and strength of our engineering organisation.

·         Hands on coding across modelling, platform and/or front-end.

Why work for Blunomy?

You will be joining a passionate group of professionals, aligned in our mission to move towards a decarbonised, circular and inclusive economy. At Blunomy you are more than a ‘cog in the machine’, you will have the ability to make a real and lasting impact across the business.

·         You have a genuine passion for energy transition and climate change, with a strong interest in technology’s role in driving sustainability and a decarbonised future.

Qualifications: An undergraduate degree or a postgraduate in a relevant discipline such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, Mathematics, or related fields.

Experience: 7 + years of experience in software engineering, with at least 2-3 years in a leadership or management role, leading technical teams.

·         Proven track record of successfully delivering complex software projects and managing software development life cycles (SDLCs).

·         Experience in hiring, mentoring, and developing engineering talent, fostering professional growth.
