Maria is a Data Scientist focused on risk modeling and the development of new products. She uses her experience in seismic hazard and risk in her role as part of our 'Nat Cat' team, working on Underwriting for Earthquake policies. Holding a PhD from Politecnico di Milano, Maria has built on her engineering seismology expertise in positions as a Doctoral and Post-doctoral Researcher both in Academy and Industry.
As a member of the data/software/devops team, Alex works alongside Underwriting Data Scientists and R&D Data Scientists to develop, industrialize and run data science tools that have already been proven useful for the business. Passionate about solving difficult problems, Alex enjoys finding simple solutions that can easily be explained to the wider team. At Descartes, he finds it really satisfying to be able to work in a team where the contribution of each team member is valued. Previously, he worked on a variety of software/data science projects such as high performance computing for scientific models on turbulence. At Descartes, data science software / MLOps projects usually require tight collaboration between areas of expertise such as data, software engineering and devops engineering.
Pierre is one of our R&D Data Scientists, working on climate risk modelling and the development of new products for Wildfire. After completing his engineering degree, Pierre obtained a PhD in Physics & Hydrodynamics from École Polytechnique & ESPCI Paris, where he built his understanding and experience modelling various phenomena, ranging from anti-fogging surfaces and condensation to statistical physics applied to microeconomics. A key part of Pierre's role is to solve complex problems in the field of machine learning.

Born out of the conviction that climate change calls for a revolutionary approach in insurance to better protect corporations and governments, Descartes was founded in 2018 to change the industry status quo.
Around the world, Descartes Underwriting offers a new generation of parametric insurance that builds resilience against natural catastrophes & climate risks. Unlike traditional insurance, which relies on lengthy loss adjustment procedures, Descartes’ parametric products pay out when a predefined event (i.e. flood, cyclone, earthquake, etc.) occurs as measured by a specified parameter or index.
Descartes’ innovative edge stems from their ability to handle massive new data sources and apply proprietary algorithms that extract value for their clients. The team utilizes machine learning and advanced algorithms to unlock valuable underwriting insights from a wide range of sources, including IoT, satellite imagery, stationary sensors, radar and third party data. Not limited to looking backwards at claims history, they model the underlying phenomenon directly, capturing trends and potential climate change impacts to better protect corporate and public sector clients.
With employees from over 20 different nationalities to date, the team at Descartes Underwriting values diversity across multiple dimensions – cultural, cognitive, leadership & experience. Continuing to build a diverse multilingual and multicultural team is core to their value proposition, allowing them to think & build globally from the first iteration. Descartes seeks talents who share our collective fighting spirit and will add additional analytical perspectives & insights.
