Job description

🪐 Discover our galaxy

Malt is Europe's leading freelancing platform with one clear mission: to give people the freedom to choose who they work with. Co-founded in 2013 by Vincent Huguet, with Alexandre Fretti as co-CEO since 2022, Malt is a tech company with a human approach that helps companies and freelancers make the perfect match.

Malt is a marketplace that embraces a community of over 700,000 freelancers and over 70,000 clients, ranging from small and medium-sized enterprises to large corporations. More than just a connector, our marketplace streamlines freelancer-client communications, simplifies administrative and legal tasks, expedites invoicing and payments, and so much more.

We are all about giving both freelancers and companies choice and added peace of mind, so that every experience on Malt is nothing less than (inter)stellar. The launch of Malt Strategy in 2023 enabled Malt to broaden its scope by offering the expertise of a network of top independent consultants and transition managers, to better support companies from the strategy to the implementation of ambitious projects.

✨ Malt is also…

- a tech company with a human approach

- a company with a strong culture fueled by 700 Malters from 40+ nationalities, working from 9 countries all around Europe - Germany, Belgium, United Arab Emirates, Spain, France, Netherlands, Nordic countries, United Kingdom, and Switzerland.

- committed to creating a safe and inclusive space where every employee can thrive both personally and professionally

- committed to equality and diversity (50% of People managers are women)

- a company with strong career path policies allowing all Malters to develop and grow equally

- backed by renowned investors including ISAI, Serena, Eurazeo Growth, Goldman Sachs and BPI France

Context for this position

  • Malt is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to conduct and contribute to research on the topics of online biases and discrimination. The research will bring actionable insights and guide the company’s decisions
  • It is well established that there are risks of biases and discriminations in traditional and online labor markets, coming from algorithms, humans, and market design (among other sources). As the European leader in freelancing, Malt has a responsibility to identify such cases and mitigate them.
  • The objective of the researcher will be to assess whether there are outcome and opportunity gaps between freelancers from different demographics and, if there are, identify their sources. The researcher will also propose and test solutions - offline through counterfactual analysis and/or online through randomized experiments.
  • The researcher will be part of the data team, an international team with about 30 members with a variety of profiles, including 6 PhDs (in economics, computer science, and environmental sciences).
  • Key responsibilities

  • The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible both for interfacing with Malt’s academic partners and for conducting research internally. We want to emphasize that this is a research and development position and therefore the work goes beyond the analysis of data and production of insights. We list below examples of typical tasks
  • Defining research questions, setting research plans and methodologies
  • Data cleaning, processing, and analysis
  • Sharing datasets, explaining the data to academic partners, inquiring internally about the sources of the data
  • Setting up online experiments and surveys, and coordinating with the engineering, data science, and product teams
  • Building data tools, training and evaluating models, pushing code in production, building and storing tables in our cloud
  • Disseminating the results internally and externally (conferences, publications).
  • Administrative tasks (eg. reporting expenses from research funds)
  • This position does not incorporate independent research outside the scope of the company; any independent research would be conducted outside of regular work hours
  • About the work contract

  • Fixed-term contract / Contrat à Durée Déterminée (CDD)
  • Duration: 2 years
  • Salary: in the range 50-60k€/year depending on skills and experience
  • Position can be full-time or part-time (3+ days per week)
  • Start date: preferably before September 2024, but negotiable
  • Location: strong preference for Paris, with flexible working arrangements
  • About you

  • The strongest candidates love being hands on, demonstrate curiosity, and are eager to learn new skills. They are good communicators, enjoy collaboration and are particularly driven by impact.
  • PhD (completed by start of employment) in economics, statistics, social sciences, computer science or any other scientific discipline with expertise relevant to the problems and methods described above
  • Experience with econometrics / causal inference
  • Excellent coding skills (preferably Python) and experience conducting empirical projects
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to set goals, track progress, and prioritize to meet deadlines
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Fluent in english
  • Malt is the perfect space to thrive personally and professionally 💫
