Leading international news agency AFP (Agence France-Presse) is seeking an experienced and dynamic English-language Deputy Bureau Chief and News Editor to join its newsroom in Islamabad.

This is a fantastic chance to join a media organisation that prioritises on the ground journalism in a challenging patch rich with reporting opportunities, as well as one of the few with a permanent bureau in Kabul since the Taliban government returned to power.

Working under the Bureau Chief for Afghanistan and Pakistan and alongside the Kabul Bureau Chief, the News Editor writes and edits copy flowing in from staff reporters and stringers in all corners of the two countries.

You will be managing a team in Islamabad and Karachi bureaus that together represent about 12 reporters, photographers, video journalists and digital verification journalists, as well as support staff, and a team in Kabul of around five.

You will be expected to reinforce the Kabul bureau from time to time and step in for the Afghanistan and Pakistan Bureau Chief when they are away.

Alongside breaking news coverage, it will be your responsibility to build a file of excellent multimedia long form content on topics such as the environment, technology and society.

The News Editor must navigate security and access challenges as well as cultural sensitivities and be able stay cool and clear-headed in a demanding, fast-paced environment.

You will be responsible for meeting AFP’s priorities of speed and accuracy while ensuring that content meets the company’s editorial guidelines.

The News Editor will contribute to the fight against mis/disinformation by working with fact-checkers in the network, developing skills in the various methods of online verification, now indispensable for all journalism. Online training is available here.

The job requires flexibility in terms of hours, including working evenings and weekends when necessary.
