Job description

Welcome to the Team

At Nexans, our global vision is to electrify the future. In Power Transmission, we deliver high-voltage subsea and land cable systems that connect nations, enable renewable-energy integration and strengthen the electricity networks that power modern society. As a leading EPCI contractor, we bring together engineering, manufacturing, installation and project-execution expertise to deliver complex turnkey projects around the world.

In the UK, we are expanding our project presence and supporting major energy-infrastructure programmes, including the Orkney Connection for SSE and the East Anglia TWO and East Anglia ONE North projects for ScottishPower Renewables. Join us to help deliver these projects safely, responsibly and with lasting impact.

Getting a Flying Start

As Senior Health & Safety Engineer, you will provide independent HSER leadership, assurance and strategic direction throughout the project lifecycle. You will be accountable for establishing a robust HSER framework that enables safe execution, effective risk management and continuous improvement across complex EPCI cable projects. Your work will give our people, partners and clients confidence that HSER risks are understood, controlled and actively managed.

How You Make an Impact

  • Lead the HSER strategy, governance and assurance framework for assigned projects, ensuring alignment with Nexans’ management system, contractual obligations and UK regulatory requirements.
  • Independently lead the development, implementation and maintenance of project HSER plans, procedures, controls and reporting arrangements from tender through to project close-out.
  • Provide visible leadership and promote a proactive Safety First culture across project offices, manufacturing locations, marine and land installation sites, subcontractors and suppliers; intervene decisively where work is unsafe.
  • Lead critical risk-management activities, including risk workshops, HAZIDs, HAZOPs, risk assessments and assurance of mitigation actions through the project risk register.
  • Lead or oversee the investigation, reporting and follow-up of significant HSER incidents, near misses and non-conformities, ensuring effective corrective actions and organisational learning.
  • Establish and maintain effective engagement with clients, regulators where required, subcontractors, suppliers and internal Nexans delivery teams, confidently representing Nexans on senior HSER matters.
  • Provide senior HSER input to tender activities, including review of customer requirements, risk exposure, resources, execution strategies and HSER deliverables.
  • Mentor, coach and develop HSER colleagues and project team members, contributing to capability-building, onboarding and consistent practice across the Project HSER function.

Your Starting Points

  • A university degree in engineering, HSER/QHSE, risk management or a related discipline.
  • Relevant professional Health and Safety and risk-management training and certifications; UK-recognised qualifications such as NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent) and Chartered Membership of IOSH, or demonstrable progress towards it, are highly desirable.
  • At least 5 years’ relevant experience in a senior Health & Safety, HSER or Project HSER management role within major projects, including demonstrable accountability for HSER delivery on complex, high-risk or multi-site projects.
  • Significant experience in EPCI, energy, offshore, marine, construction, manufacturing and/or land-installation environments, ideally including high-voltage transmission or similarly safety-critical infrastructure projects.
  • A strong track record of independently leading project HSER strategy, plans, governance, assurance, reporting and improvement activities across the full project lifecycle.
  • Strong practical knowledge of UK HSE legislation and regulatory expectations, together with advanced understanding of risk-management methods and tools, including HAZID, HAZOP, risk assessment and incident investigation.
  • Experience leading significant incident investigations and ensuring that effective lessons learned, corrective actions and preventive measures are embedded.
  • Strong project-management skills, sound commercial awareness, structured problem-solving capability and the ability to prioritise effectively in a fast-moving project environment.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
  • Willingness to travel regularly within the UK and internationally, in line with project needs.
