Welcome to the Jungle is a media platform specializing in human resources. Our goal is to make the search for a job—and the right candidate for a role—easier and more effective for all through the content we publish. We are currently based in France (our historical market), Spain, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

In 2019, 1,757 French companies published 12,791 specifications for tech vacancies on our website, including details about the technical stack required. Engineers are also able to research a company by stack using our website.

Here we present the results of data analysis we carried out on the most-mentioned technologies in the job specifications published by these French companies on Welcome to the Jungle’s website in 2019. We were also able to calculate the average number of prospective candidates per technology who applied via our website in order to determine the market competition for each.

Methodology

So, how did we proceed?

We started by gathering a list of 1,000 technologies mentioned on GitHub and Stack Overflow databases. From there, we scrolled through the titles and descriptions of tech vacancies published on the Welcome to the Jungle website for France in 2019 to determine the most-mentioned technologies per category as well as the average number of applicants per technology.

But there are a few important details you need to know before heading straight to the results of this study.

First, there is a degree of known bias in this research. The companies considered in the study do not perfectly represent the full variety of the real French marketplace. In particular, most of the French companies who use our website are located in Paris and fall into the categories of those that have between 15 and 250 employees.

Second, we decided to classify the results of the study using categorization already used on our stack summary page. The categories are as follows: backend, frontend, mobile, devOps, data, IDE, continuous integration, project management, and monitoring. This choice of categorizing by functional area implies that there is no distinction between the type of technologies. So for each category, you will find a mix of languages, frameworks, libraries, tools, databases, and platforms.

Finally, regarding the calculation of average number of applicants per technology, we removed the results of the technologies that appeared in under 100 jobs in order to avoid possible misinterpretations.
