Job description

The international news agency AFP (Agence France-Presse) is seeking a motivated and experienced video journalist for a full-time position in our New Delhi bureau. This exciting post involves shooting and editing hard news and features in South Asia for a worldwide audience.

The Video Journalist (VJ) will help to plan and produce compelling, varied and accurate video coverage from across India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Bhutan (South Asia).

Fast-paced and exciting, the job involves a mix of reporting and editing both news and feature videos, including from our network of freelancers and third-party provider PTI, the national news agency. You will shoot numerous events Live.

There will be regular assignments within India and possibly overseas.

Reaching younger audiences is central to our coverage and the successful candidate will be packed with bright multimedia story ideas that will boost the file, in collaboration with the text and photo teams.

The VJ will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy of his/her reporting and respect for the agency’s editorial policies.

He/She must be able to source and handle user generated content during breaking news situations, including ensuring proper authorisations/transfer of copyright are obtained before using videos from third parties.

Successful candidate will contribute to the fight against misinformation by helping factcheckers in the network and ensure he/she is trained in the various methods of online verification, now indispensable for all journalism. Online training is available here.

The job requires flexibility in terms of hours, including working evenings and weekends when necessary. On occasion, the successful candidate may be called upon to help the Asia TV editing desk, especially in relation to production from the Region.

In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.


Preferred experience

  • Extensive experience shooting and producing short-format hard news and feature packages for broadcast, cable networks or agencies, including live shooting experience

  • Honed shooting and digital non-linear editing skills, experience sourcing and verifying UGC, and excellent organisational skills, with the ability to work under pressure and to deadline

  • Native-level Hindi and fluent English are required, with other Indian languages a significant advantage

  • Sound knowledge of Indian politics, culture and social issues, excellent news judgement, and familiarity with South Asian and international affairs

  • A good team player in an international workplace, able to spot and report stories of interest to AFP’s viewers around the world

  • Must be comfortable using and monitoring social media
