Job Title: Video Coding Sr Engineer

Location: Flexible (Paris Issy-les-Moulineaux) - This role requires proximity to an office location with the flexibility to work from home.

The Role

GoPro is seeking a top tier candidate for a Video Coding Senior Engineer role in the Image Algorithms team, located in Paris, France. The position will be involved in the development of solutions embedded in the next generation of products to contribute to a smooth GoPro user experience all around the world.

GoPro ecosystem starts from our cameras capturing and saving the moments we want to share with the best Image Quality as possible, and continues within our GoPro software applications to generate unforgettable memories clips. A core block of this ecosystem is the video encoding/decoding step. The role is about mastering all opportunities of improvements around this video coding stage.

What You Will Do

• Development activities
  • Watch and benchmark video coding technology trends
    • Be able to independently investigate, research and report on new developments in encoding/decoding
    • Attend relevant industry events, talks and seminars related to potentially emerging compression techniques and tools; regularly present findings to cross-functional teams
    • Recommend resources for (or potentially generate) test material for specialized compression testing
  • Participate in the definition of the (short and long term) video coding strategies for GoPro global ecosystem: camera hardware core and software engine for GoPro applications
    • Perform use-case based analysis to ensure optimal consumer workflow experiences when using GoPro content in GoPro applications as well as third-party software editing applications
  • Develop and test various firmware tools options to optimize our encoding/decoding process in terms of Image Quality, encoder efficiency and power consumption
  • Support product dev teams for video coding integration
  • Tune and assess final encoded Image Quality
• Strong collaboration with Camera system architect, Firmware and Image Quality tuning engineers and also with Video Editing team from GoPro Quik applications

Skills We’re Stoked About

• Engineering education or PhD education
• Minimum 5 years of work experience in embedded video coding technologies
• Strong expertise in existing video codecs
  • H264 and H265 are mandatory
  • AV1, VP9, H266 are nice to have
• Experience with HW-accelerated video encoding/decoding
• Technical skills
  • C++, Python
  • HEVC stream analyzer tool (Intel, CodecVisa…)
  • Version control tools (Git)
• Experience with Machine Learning approaches is a big plus
• Technical English and French language practice required
• Strong interpersonal communication skills
• Strong analytical and summarizing skills
• Autonomous and rigorous work management
• Results and deadline driven
• Work agility to deal with fast-moving environment
• Active and passionate GoPro user is a big plus
