The search team has the mission to bring world-class search to all our marketplaces so that people can find what they are looking for. We are an evolving team: we recently completed our MVP (ElasticSearch-based), proved the value to the marketplaces we support, and are currently increasing our scale and reliability. We’d love for you to join us as we mature our CI/CD to relentlessly decrease our time from commit to deployment. In this role, you’d be expected to provide expertise in operational practices, help us to identify and choose the right tradeoffs, avoid common pitfalls, and leverage modern automation tools appropriately. Some examples of best practices we think we need: immutable deployments, low-latency observability through tools like honeycomb and lightstep, and canary releases. Eventually we’d love to have mature enough CI/CD to have hypothesis-based deployments using both operational and business metrics.

But this is just the beginning. We are investing in building world-class search, which we understand to mean ML-driven search. In this role, you’d be operationalizing and monitoring data pipelines, feeding quality data to training models, and load testing / tweaking db clusters as read/write ratios shift. One of your goals here would be to make deploying a pipeline to be as easy and reliable as deploying an app. Adevinta has some expertise in operationalizing kafka and kubeflow, but the search team could use expertise in other areas, especially ElasticSearch and Spark 3. Additionally, we are interested in leveraging platforms and products like Databricks, Sagemaker, Airbnb’s Bighead, or Delta Lake, so any experience with operationalizing platforms like these would be a huge plus.

We know that this is a lot to ask for in one person, but we are looking for a more senior candidate for our first permanent devops specialist. Responsibilities

• Automating the operations and production of large-scale distributed systems so no manual intervention is needed eventually
• Help develop the best possible continuous delivery pipelines supporting features such as automated promotion to production, automated canary releasing or blue-green deployments
• Ensure in-depth analysis of problems and initiate corrective actions and implementation of preventative measures
• Implement low latency observability on production systems
• Make sure that any tech solution that you put in place is robust, will scale, and failover / BCP systems are in place
• Help to automate and support the creation of data engineering infrastructure

Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 years of experience working as an operations specialist on a software dev team (less experience is OK if you have a PhD in something related)
• Experience in building systems that scale
