We’re looking for our VP Engineering whose main missions will be to :

  1. (Process) Lead the technical team’s output
  2. (People) Manage our technical leaders & mentor our tech members
  3. (Communication) Be the ambassador of our Engineering team inside and outside Shipup

💻 As a VP Engineering @Shipup, you will

As a VP Engineering, you will report to Quentin and work closely with our Product Director, technical leaders, co-founders and other leaders (sales, marketing, CSM, admin…).

You will be responsible for all software delivery, the Engineering team’s growth through hiring and, internally, individual reviews, goal setting and compensation. You will recruit, support, inspire, and scale a culture of craftsmanship, innovation and commitment within Engineering.
Together with your team you will make the right strategic decisions in the way we build software, and navigate the balance of delivering an amazing product, investing in the future and paying technical debt.

Your daily missions :

  • Directly manage our technical leaders : help them enable their teams to do their best work
  • Empower the technical team : through mentoring, reviews and professional guidance
  • Manage and improve our delivery : set goals and establish rigorous processes and metrics for Shipup’s software development life cycle. Identify and destroy time wasters.
  • Improve the quality of work : create a healthy work environment, gets energy from helping others to succeed and makes the team more valuable for working @Shipup
  • Provide data : align the technical roadmap with the rest of the company’s key objectives
  • Manage tech hirings : craft and execute a fair, inclusive and highly selective recruitment process for Engineering
  • Provide best practices and process : be obsessed with getting better every day, and asks questions to get there.
  • Share and inspire : through blog posts, open-source contributions, newsletter, conference, recruitment events attendance…

🙌 Our team

You’ll join a team of fourteen led by Quentin, our CTO & CPO :

  • Engineering : 8 technical people (2 lead developers/engineering managers, 1 senior front and 5 full-stack/back-end engineers)
  • Product & Design : 1 product director, 2 product managers, 1 product designer & 1 data analyst/engineer

This team is divided into two product squads :

  • Online-shopper perceived value
    This squad has the ownership of all features that are directly dedicated to end-customers. Squad members will focus on features for which the benefits are mainly perceived by / or directed towards the latter.
    Team members :Aliou (Lead Developer), Juliette, Jean and Arthur (Developers)

  • Merchant perceived value
    This squad has the ownership of all features that benefit directly the Merchants. Squad members will focus on providing our merchant’s operations and CS teams with the tools and resources they need to be successful.
    Team members :Simon (Lead Developer), Hugo, Kevin and Baptiste (Developers)

👩‍💻 Our Technical Stack

  • Ruby on Rails and Go backend
  • React (ES6 + Webpack + Redux) frontend
  • PostgreSQL + Elasticsearch + RabbitMQ + Redis for storage
  • Monolithic infrastructure + introduction of microservices (for about a year, 3 services today)
  • Kubernetes + Docker for ops
  • Hosted on GCP
  • Datadog, LogDNA, Sentry for monitoring

Project management : Asana, Notion, Slack, GSuite

👩‍💻 Organization & How the team works

  • Oncall: some “oncall duty” with weekly rotation, the member of the team has to take care of the maintenance and customer requests
  • Division into squads
  • Sprints of 2 weeks : daily, planning, retro, grooming…
  • Review groups
  • Peer-programing groups
  • Multidisciplinary team: the idea is to get one Product Manager and one Product Designer in each team

Preferred experience

You could be a good fit if:

  • You have held multiple senior leadership positions, including at least one of Head of Engineering, VP of Engineering or CTO with several managers reporting directly to you.
  • You are an experienced people manager and team leader. You consistently made the most of your team’s talents, by mentoring, empowering and leading by example.
  • You are focused on continuously delivering value to the customer.
  • You have an impressive track record of leading teams that built complex distributed systems.
  • You watch closely the latest technology trends and new industry standards
  • You are fluent in English, French is a big plus.

Nice to have:

  • You witnessed a company growing from 20 to 100+ people and understand the dynamics it implies for Engineering
