Engineering Lead Flock

ABOUT FLOCK

Road accidents kill and injure people, damage vehicles, and cost businesses fortunes. But traditional insurance does nothing to prevent them - it just pays out claims when they happen. At Flock, we’re changing that. Using telematics, AI, and real-time data, we proactively help our fleet customers prevent crashes. We obsessively focus on keeping drivers safe, and we put our money where our mouth is - paying out millions of pounds per year to fleets that get safer over time.

We were acquired by Admiral in May 2026. Now we combine the backing of the UK’s leading motor insurer with startup energy and speed. We’re growing fast with bigger plans than ever, and we’re hugely optimistic that our approach will save many more lives in the decade ahead.

We’re on a mission to make the world quantifiably safer. Join us!

We’re an AI-first business, so whatever the role, we want people who reach for AI by default, stay curious about what it can do, and use it to work faster and think bigger.

THE ROLE

Engineering Lead for the Acquisition team. You’ll work closely with the PM to lead the team toward its goals, owning delivery, operational reliability and developer experience. You’ll ship production code and provide technical coaching and leadership to the engineers around you, not line management. You’ll also shape how the team uses AI tools and coding agents to ship faster without lowering the quality bar.

WHAT WE THINK IS MOST EXCITING ABOUT THE ROLE:

Lead a team building products that directly drive Flock’s growth

• Own delivery and technical quality for the Acquisition team, working hand in hand with the PM to ship features that directly impact how fleets find and choose Flock.

• Write high-quality, well-tested TypeScript and own end-to-end delivery to production

Partner with product to drive impact

• Work closely with the PM, the Engineering Leadership Team and stakeholders to translate business goals into clear technical scope, success metrics and delivery plans.

Grow engineers around you

• Lead by example through code, design discussions and pairing.

• Coach and mentor engineers across the team to raise standards and share ownership of technical direction.

Shape how the team works, not just what it builds

• Drive improvements to developer experience, CI/CD, observability and release practices that make the whole team faster and more confident.

• Make pragmatic trade-offs that balance reliability, performance and cost across AWS services.

• Decide how the team uses AI, from coding assistants to agent workflows in review and release, keeping engineering judgement where it matters.

A LITTLE MORE ON WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

As an Engineering Lead at Flock you’ll own delivery and technical direction for the Acquisition team, co-leading with the PM to ship products that directly drive growth, while raising the bar for the engineers around you.

API-Driven Development

• Integrate with and contribute to the development of RESTful APIs exposed via API Gateway.

Serverless & Cloud Infrastructure

• Use your AWS experience (Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, S3, CloudWatch) to support and extend the Acquisition team’s services and pipelines.

• Work with infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or CDK for provisioning and managing cloud resources.

Collaboration & Agile Delivery

• Co-own the team’s success with the PM, jointly leading projects from scoping and planning through to delivery and measuring impact.

• Give engineers the space and ownership to lead projects themselves, asking the right questions to challenge their thinking and help them land on the right solution.

Code Quality & Technical Standards

• Deliver high-quality, well-tested code and act as a force-multiplier, raising standards through code reviews, pairing and design discussions.

• Champion practical testing, type-safe APIs and pragmatic patterns that shape long-term technical direction across the team.

• Set the example on AI-assisted development and coach engineers on where it genuinely speeds the team up and where human judgement needs to stay in the loop.

Working closely with your PM, you’ll bring clarity to complex problems and help define sharply scoped, impactful deliverables. Your success won’t be measured by your own output alone, but by the output, quality and growth of the whole team around you.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO FLOCK:

ESSENTIAL

• Proven ability to co-lead a team alongside a PM, taking joint ownership of delivery, quality and outcomes, not just your own output.

• Strong hands-on engineering ability; comfortable shipping high-quality, well-tested TypeScript in production and holding the team to the same standard.

• Significant experience with AWS and modern serverless (Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, S3, CloudWatch) or other cloud platforms.

• A pragmatic approach to technical decisions, balancing reliability, observability, performance and cost, and bringing engineers along on the reasoning.

• Track record of raising engineering standards as a force-multiplier, through code reviews, pairing, design discussions and shaping long-term technical direction.

• Strong communication skills; able to represent the team upwards and translate business goals into clear technical scope and delivery plans.

• Experience improving developer experience, CI/CD, release practices and delivery cadence across a team.

• Confident using AI development tools every day, with experience of helping a team adopt them without letting quality slip.

PREFERABLE

• Experience aligning technical direction beyond your immediate team, working with senior stakeholders and other leads to shape how engineering works at a broader level.

• Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or CDK, with a track record of improving operational resilience through observability, runbooks and automated recovery.

• Practical experience designing event-driven, distributed systems and navigating the trade-offs that come with eventual consistency at scale.

• Background in a fast-moving, product-led environment where commercial impact drives decisions and adapting quickly is part of the job.

• A track record of creating the conditions for engineers to step up, not just mentoring but actively giving ownership and space to grow.
