Our take

Every year, millions of personal injury cases in the US are resolved with only a small fraction going to trial, leaving many victims potentially under-compensated due to inaccurate settlement proposals. EvenUp aims to change this by leveraging AI technology to streamline the assessment of injury cases. The AI tools evaluate raw case files, including medical and police records, creating tailored "demand packages" that present comprehensive compensation arguments. This improves lawyer performance and victim outcomes. Despite concerns about AI bias and privacy, EvenUp has garnered significant investor interest, closing a funding round in 2025 that was one of the largest in the history of legal AI. Now valued at over $2 billion, it is investing in its team and introducing new techniques and products for personal injury and other legal areas.

You'll be working on

  • As the Payroll Manager at EvenUp, you will support the transition from our current PEO model to an in-house payroll architecture while scaling our multi-region payroll operations. You will own end-to-end multi-state US payroll operations, oversee Canadian payroll execution, and evaluate and design our long-term strategy for India payroll
  • This role is ideal for a hands-on, detail-oriented payroll leader who excels at navigating multi-jurisdiction tax compliance, implementing scalable global payroll systems, and building seamless cross-functional workflows across Finance, Accounting, and People teams
  • PEO Migration & System Implementation - Support the end-to-end transition from a PEO model to an in-house global payroll and benefits provider, establishing automated workflows, controls, system integrations, and documentation from scratch
  • Global & Multi-State Payroll Operations - Execute full-cycle multi-state US payroll and directly oversee Canadian payroll processing, ensuring 100% timeliness, accuracy, and compliance with local statutory requirements (e.g., CPP/EI, EHT, provincial tax filings, wage-and-hour laws)
  • India Payroll Evaluation: Assess, evaluate, and establish the roadmap for India payroll execution, ensuring local statutory compliance and operational readiness for team scaling
  • General Ledger & Accounting Integration - Partner with the general ledger team to reconcile payroll data, manage monthly journal entries, payroll accruals, benefit allocations, and balance sheet reconciliation support
  • People & HRIS Collaboration - Partner closely with the People team to manage benefit deductions, equity payroll tax implications, and compensation changes while ensuring data integrity across HRIS and payroll platforms
  • Compliance, Controls & External Audits - Act as the primary subject matter expert for payroll tax compliance and regulatory changes across US federal, state, local, Canadian, and international jurisdictions. Maintain robust internal controls and act as the lead contact for payroll, workers’ comp, and tax audits
  • Employee Support & Ticketing - Serve as the primary point of contact for employee payroll/tax inquiries, resolving ticket escalations regarding withholdings, direct deposits, and pay statements
  • Key Success Metrics (KPIs)
  • Payroll Accuracy & On-Time Execution - Maintain a >95% accuracy rate on net pay calculations, withholdings, and benefit deductions across all US states and Canadian provinces while ensuring 100% on-time disbursement across every payroll cycle
  • Month-End Payroll Reconciliation Timeliness - Review all payroll journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations in FloQast/ERP within 2 business days following the close of each payroll period
  • Tax Filing & Statutory Compliance - Maintain zero late-filing penalties or notice escalations across US federal/state/local tax authorities, Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA), provincial agencies, and international compliance bodies
  • System Automation Rate - Target >85% automation for payroll data syncing between HRIS, time-tracking, benefit providers, and the NetSuite general ledger to minimize manual inputs
  • First 90 to 180 Days:
  • Complete the transition off the PEO onto the new in-house US payroll platform, establishing standardized payroll run checklists and internal review controls
  • Complete a comprehensive assessment and cost/benefit evaluation of India payroll operational models, presenting key recommendations to the VP, Controller
  • First 12 Months:
  • Fully optimize in-house payroll workflows, automated NetSuite GL integrations, and process workflows within FloQast
  • Execute the chosen payroll architecture for India, establishing local compliance, tax withholding mechanisms, and banking rail setups
  • Successfully lead annual payroll, 401(k)/RRSP, and statutory tax audits with zero material findings or adjustments

Benefits

  • Flexible working hours to match your style
  • Offsites - get to meet your coworkers on a fully-expenses trip ever 6-12 months
  • A variety of virtual team events such as game nights & happy hours
  • Choice of medical, dental, and vision insurance plans for you and your family
  • Flexible paid time off and 10+ holidays per year
  • A stipend to upgrade your home office for fully-remote roles
  • 401k for US-based employees

We're looking for

  • Global & Multi-State Expertise - Deep technical knowledge of US multi-state payroll, Canadian payroll regulations, and international tax/compliance frameworks (experience with India payroll evaluation or setup highly preferred).
  • Accounting & Analytical Rigor - Strong analytical skills with a history of automating manual processes to increase efficiency and reduce errors in payroll cycles
  • Experience - 5+ years of progressive experience in payroll administration, with a track record of building payroll processes in a fast-growing tech company.
  • Integrity & Communication - Exceptional discretion in handling sensitive employee compensation data/confidential personnel records and clear communication skills to resolve employee queries and partner effectively across People, Legal, and Finance teams
  • Systems & Tools - Hands-on experience with top-tier payroll platforms (e.g., Rippling, ADP, Workday), NetSuite ERP integration, and close management tools.
