Operation Theatre (OT) nurses often work in crisis teams, usually to treat victims injured in armed conflict. They can also be part of a team providing long-term surgical care to communities that have limited access to health care.
Diagnostic instruments and other equipment are on our missions very limited, so OT nurses usually work in difficult conditions with the team’s simplest equipment, without X-rays or devices for artificial respiration. The range of work activities ranges from practical cooperation in the operation theatre through organizational activities to the training of local staff.
OT nurses organize and carry-out all nursing activities related to the operating theatre running, according to MSF health protocols, universal hygienic standards and in coordination with the surgeon and anaesthetist, in order to ensure a smooth functioning of the surgical activities offered to patients.
